Convective Turnover Timescale Research

Noyes et al. 1984a: The Relation Between Stellar Rotation Rate and Activity Cycle Periods

  • alpha effect = rotation effects convection
  • omega effect = differential rotation creates a shear
  • both process produce an overall helicity in the convective zone
  • Rossby number was first used in Parker 1979
  • if chromospheric activity is governed by rossby number, maybe Prot is as well
Landin et al. 2010: Theoretical Values of Convective Turnover Times and Rossby Numbers (VERY HELPFUL)
  • tacholine =  interface between radiative zone and base of convective envelope
  • produced a code (ATON 2.3) which inputs various physics of main sequence stars and outputs an estimate for tau(c)
  • rotation vs convection produces magnetic activity
  • this does not apply to pre main sequence stars which are fully convective and do not have a tacholine (solid body rotators)
  • Rossby number --> dynamo number D=1/Ro^2 -->growth rate of the magnetic field
  • created models for different masses which include age, Prot, tau(c), and rossby number Ro
